Does Grok Allow NSFW? Spicy Mode and the Rules (2026)
Partly, and only for fictional adults. xAI's policy bans undressing real people and sexualizing children but not fictional adult content. What is confirmed, what comes only from third-party guides, and what changed in January 2026.

Does Grok allow NSFW content? Partly, and only for fictional adults. As of 22 October 2026, xAI’s written policy bans undressing real people and sexualizing children, but does not ban fictional adult content. Grok has had adult companions since July 2025 and an opt-in “spicy” mode in its Imagine tool since August 2025, and in January 2026 xAI tightened what Grok will do with photos of real people. What we could not find is an xAI page saying who can switch spicy mode on today, so this guide marks which parts are confirmed and which come only from third-party guides.
It is part of our wider guide to NSFW AI rules.
Does Grok allow NSFW content? The short answer
- Fictional adults: yes, within limits. At launch TechCrunch found spicy mode produced partial nudity, while stronger prompts were often blurred or blocked.
- Real people: no. xAI’s policy bans undressing or sexualizing a real person’s image, and in January 2026 xAI said it blocked editing real people into revealing clothing.
- Companions: sexual roleplay is possible with Grok’s adult companions, according to press reports and a child-safety review.
- Who can use it: third-party guides say a paid plan, an age check and, in most regions, the mobile app. We could not confirm that on an xAI page.
What xAI’s policy says
xAI’s Acceptable Use Policy is effective August 14, 2026 on the live page, which is headed with the SpaceXSI name. Under its privacy and publicity rules it bans:
- “Undressing or nudifying real persons, or otherwise altering a real person’s image or likeness to depict them in an intimate or sexual context”;
- “Depicting likenesses of persons in a pornographic manner”, which sits in the same list and which we read as being about real people;
- “Sexualizing or exploiting children”.
It also bans “jailbreaking, adversarial prompting, or prompt injection” and bypassing safety systems. What the text does not contain is a ban on fictional adult sexual content. That is why Grok can have an adult tier at all. The line xAI draws is real people and children, not sex.
What Grok actually does
| Date | What happened | Source |
|---|---|---|
| July 2025 | Grok launches companions, including an anime character called Ani. Later reporting says they allow erotic roleplay | TechCrunch |
| August 4, 2025 | Grok Imagine launches to SuperGrok and Premium+ subscribers on iOS, with a “spicy mode” that allows partial nudity | TechCrunch |
| December 2025 to January 2026 | Users on X use Grok to alter photos of real people into revealing clothing, prompting probes in several countries | CNBC, Wikipedia |
| January 14, 2026 | xAI says it has blocked editing real people into revealing clothing for all users, and limits image creation and editing on X to paid subscribers. California’s attorney general announces an investigation | CNBC |
| January 27, 2026 | Common Sense Media rates Grok among the worst chatbots it has assessed for teens | TechCrunch |
On the day of the January announcement, Elon Musk wrote that with NSFW enabled Grok is meant to allow “upper body nudity of imaginary adult humans (not real ones)”, compared it with R-rated movies, and added that settings would “vary in other regions according to the laws on a country by country basis”, as CNBC quoted him. That is the closest thing to a stated standard we found, and it comes from Musk’s post rather than a policy page.
What we could not confirm
We did not find an xAI help page that describes spicy mode: how to turn it on, which plan it needs, how age is checked or where it is offered. Here is what we do know about access:
- grok.com/plans lists four tiers in October 2026, Plus, Premium, Super and Ultra, priced in local currency. Under Plus it lists “Grok Chat, Voice, Imagine, and Build”. It does not mention spicy mode.
- Three guides published this autumn, by Fello AI (updated October 14), AI Journal (published July 13) and RoboRhythms (updated September 12), agree that spicy mode needs a paid plan, an 18+ age check and the mobile app, and that it is unavailable in some regions.
- They disagree on how tight it is. RoboRhythms says a July 2026 model update blocks anything beyond a PG feel; the others describe it as still available. None cites an xAI page, and all are independent sites, so treat these as unconfirmed.
If you are deciding whether to pay for Grok because of this feature, check in the app first. Ours is a guide to published rules, not a test of Grok’s outputs.
Real people: the line that moved in January 2026
The deepfake episode is why Grok’s real-people rules are stricter now than in the first half of 2025. xAI told users that “this restriction applies to all users, including paid subscribers” and that image creation and editing on X would be limited to paid subscribers, as CNBC reported. Regulators in India, Malaysia, Indonesia, Ireland, the UK, France, Australia and the European Commission announced probes, and Indonesia and Malaysia imposed temporary bans on Grok, according to the same report. If your goal is a clip of a real person, whether a celebrity or someone you know, Grok is not the answer and neither is any service that follows the law. See the next section for what is allowed.
Age checks
TechCrunch’s January 27 report on the Common Sense Media assessment says testers on teen accounts were not asked for age verification, that Grok “doesn’t appear to use context clues to identify teens”, and that its companions “enable erotic roleplay and romantic relationships”. xAI released a Kids Mode in October 2025, and Common Sense Media’s head of AI assessments said it “doesn’t work”. Whatever has changed since then, the report is a reason to treat Grok’s age gate with caution, and to keep any account you use for adult content to yourself.
If you want adult content with clear rules
Grok is the only large general assistant we checked with an adult tier, and it is narrow: fictional adults only, real people blocked, availability that depends on plan, platform and country. If you want more, there are services built for it, and we compare seven in best NSFW AI apps. For the other big assistants, see does ChatGPT allow NSFW.
On our site you can chat with AI characters who are all adults, and make short clips from a photo that is yours or that someone has explicitly agreed you may use. Our terms spell out the rules, and our plans do not renew on their own.
